Overview of the role

The Community Outreach Worker is a full-time position under the Violence Prevention Program.  The Violence Prevention Program implements the Group Violence Intervention strategy while also collaborating with Linn County’s Stand Up for Peace initiative. The Community Outreach Worker provides intensive case management for group involved youth, young adults and families in our community to decrease group and gun violence.  This position works closely with the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Juvenile and Adult Probation Services, Linn County Public Health, Cedar Rapids School District, and other community partners.  

 

The Fostering Futures Violence Prevention Community Outreach Worker will typically work Monday-Friday 9-5 pm. There may be times where meetings and client interactions are early morning, evening, or weekend time frames. We offer a flexible scheduling within the bounds of meeting the needs of the clients, staff, and/or program.

What you’ll do

  • Provide case management and mentoring for Fostering Futures Violence Prevention young people or future clients according to program policies.
  • To learn and develop the competencies of the Group Violence Intervention model to apply the principles to working with young people, families, law enforcement, system services, and other community partners.
  • Focus on trauma informed, strength and solution-based practices while empowering the clientele we work with.
  • Performs required documentation duties and maintain client files with detail and organization including data collection and reports on client progress based on program descriptions.
  • Facilitate life skills building lessons.

What you need

  • Minimum of 2 years full-time experience in the delivery of human services field, work with at-risk young people, or graduation from an accredited college, institute or university, with an AA or bachelor’s degree from an accredited program.
  • Comfort using basic computer software.
  • Basic typing and data entry skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and be insurable by the agency auto insurance policy.
  • Ability to pass criminal records and background checks, including child and dependent adult abuse, submitted via Foundation 2 and completed by the agency or their third-party vendor. Background checks will be run and must be passed every 3 years of subsequent employment. However, due to the nature of the position, all candidates will be considered.
  • Live within 50 miles of Cedar Rapids, IA.
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Successfully complete required trainings within required time periods. Plus 2 years of human service experience.
  • Experience of working with and compassion for at-risk youth preferred.
  • Experience in strengths-based practices preferred. Experience in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques preferred.
  • Ability to clearly communicate emotional support to people in crisis preferred.
