What is 988?

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

The 988 Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. We are one of two agencies in Iowa who answer 988 in the state.

How it works

When you call or text 988, you will be routed to one of the two agencies in Iowa that are part of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline network. We answer a majority of calls placed by Iowa area codes. Once we connect, you’ll receive the same high-quality, rapid support you receive at Foundation 2 Crisis Services.

How to connect

  • Dial 988 on a cell phone or landline.
  • Send a text to 988. You’ll be directed to counselors from the Veterans, Spanish-language, LGBTQI+ service, or the main 988 line. Any text message to 988 starts this process.
  • Chat through the 988 Lifeline website.
