Overview of the Role
As a crisis counselor, you will be responsible for helping clients in crisis at the Linn County Mental Health Access Center. Responsibilities include providing triage and intake services for clients who come to the Linn County Mental Health Access Center. You will assist clients with scheduling assessments, re-connecting with service providers, and care coordination services to assist them in connecting with long-term mental health services. You will work as part of the larger team at the Access Center, including our Foundation 2 Crisis Services team at the Access Center and other community partners.

What You’ll Do
- Provide triage and intake services for clients according to program policies.
- Assist clients with scheduling assessment or re-connecting with prior/ current service providers.
- Conduct follow-up calls for all assigned clients within designated timeframes.
- Practice good customer service by answering emails, phone calls and requests timely.
- Complete required documentation and maintain up-to-date client information within the electronic health record, according to designated time frames.
- Provide care coordination services and assist individuals with connecting to long term mental health services.
- Offer support, assistance and referral information.
What You Need
- Bachelor’s degree in human service and one (1) or more year’s relevant experience. OR bachelor’s degree in related field with 30 hours of human service coursework.
- Comfort using basic computer software.
- High comfort with computers with the ability to type quickly and multi-task.
- Excellent writing and grammar skills.
- Pass all background checks completed by Foundation 2 Crisis Services.
- Live within 50 miles of Cedar Rapids, IA.
- Attend all MCO trainings within 120 days of hire (40 hours, including two (2) consecutive eight (8) hour days).
- Successfully complete the required trainings within the required time periods.
- Submit copy of college degree or transcript as required by licensure for personnel file.
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- Experience in crisis services is preferred.
- Education or training in trauma-informed care is preferred.
- Experience in strengths-based practices is preferred.
- Experience in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques is preferred.
- Ability to clearly communicate emotional support to people in crisis is preferred.
- Background in motivational interviewing is preferred.
- Knowledge/experience working in the mental health, substance use, and/or problem gambling field is preferred.
