Stand Up for Peace is a Cedar Rapids-based community collaboration to reduce gun violence. Law enforcement, social services and community members work together to eliminate barriers and deliver a credible message against violence for individuals at the highest risk of group and gun violence. We provide Group Violence Intervention evidence-based services part of the model.
Group Violence Intervention
Working together to end the cycle of violence

What we do
Our Stand Up for Peace: Group Violence Intervention team provides trauma-informed, client-centered case management and connection to services as a pathway from risky behaviors and toward positive relationships.
We utilize the evidence-based Group Violence Intervention (GVI) model, including one-on-one meetings with individuals and families who have been impacted by gun violence.
Stand Up for Peace initiatives can help share important information, build community, and reduce barriers such as access to employment, food or housing. Services are voluntary, free and confidential.
Our services can address barriers including
- Housing
- Transportation
- Employment
- Education

Services in action
A client’s mother expressed that they didn’t have stable housing. Our outreach worker assisted them in finding private landlords that had available homes to rent and with completing the application. We were able to financially aid the mother with the deposit and household essentials for move-in. Through Stand up for Peace: Group Violence Intervention, the family secured stable housing.
A client struggled to find employment. It was very difficult for him to reach out and ask for help finding a job. Our outreach worker connected him with resources that taught him how to write a resume, complete job applications and how to interview. Through these dedicated efforts, this client was able to find a job to support him and his daughter. He was very excited to share the news after his interview and he felt a great sense of accomplishment!

We honor National Youth Violence Prevention Week in April by partnering with the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Students sign pledges against violence in the home, community and schools. Last year, we had more than 950 pledges!
