Frequently asked questions

Our services are provided at no cost, regardless of income. We appreciate our community partners and donors who help make this possible.

Our services are confidential. This means no one will know you reached out unless you want to tell them. This is true for youth and adults who reach out. If desired, we can help you feel prepared to tell someone in your life what you’re going through. Our Mobile Crisis Outreach teams wear regular clothes and arrive in an unmarked car.

When you reach out to our crisis counselors, they will do everything they can to listen to what you’re going through and support you in a way that’s helpful to you. Many people feel better after talking about their situation with our caring, knowledgeable counselors. Sometimes, further support is needed to help keep you safe. If our crisis counselor believes you are in immediate danger of hurting yourself or others, it may be necessary to coordinate with additional emergency support including Mobile Crisis Outreach or 911. This will be done with your knowledge while talking with the crisis counselor.

People reach out for many different reasons. We define a crisis as any stress or pressure that has become too great for you to cope with alone. This means different things to each person. It can include things like thoughts of suicide, divorce, illness or a series of smaller problems that have continued to compound. If you feel that you need support for what you’re experiencing, we’re here for you.

It’s important to check in with your loved ones. Making conversations about mental health and wellness part of regular conversation can make it easier to respond when a crisis occurs. If you notice someone’s behavior is concerning or has changed, ask them how they’re doing. Express your concerns. Offer support that you feel is appropriate.

If someone shares that they have having thoughts of suicide, know how to respond. Stay calm and listen to what they have to say. It’s also a good idea to get support for yourself as you help them navigate their thoughts. You can reach out to our crisis counselors at 988 or 319-362-2174. Learn more about how to respond here.

We do not put limits on the number of times you can access support. If we are no longer the best fit and a higher level of support is needed, we can help you navigate that step. We do not respond to unsafe situations that pose a danger to clients or our staff.
